25 Aug 09 How come only women’s clothes have fastenings at the back?

KS asked:


No male clothes — except a few specialized garments like some wetsuits — have back fastenings.

But lots of women’s clothes do: skirts, dresses, swimsuits, bra’s. I even have pants that zip at the back and a shirt that buttons in back.

Why this difference?

Why put fastenings at the back at all, since that makes them much more awkward to reach?

And if women have to deal with back fastenings, why not men?
P.S. This isn’t a complaint — just curiosity about how the current situation arose.
